Best Fall Patterns

Posted by janette on Jul 26, 2011 in Daily

Summer has flown by and now it is time to think fall, believe it or not. The very best fall patterns I

have found are, of course, by my all time favorite designer, Karen Lindsay. Karen’s fall leaf is simply gorgeous! The pattern looks a bit complicated, but is actually quite easy to tat. The leaf pattern is a beginning level pattern. As with many of Karen’s patterns the leaves are applied to a sampler and then hung on the wall. How perfect for fall decor.

My second favorite pattern is the tatted witch. I love this wimsical witch. Everytime I look at the witch, I smile. The witch is tatted with split-rings, so this pattern is an advanced level pattern. The witch is a good pattern to tat when practicing the split ring, because the lengths of split rings on the skirt wouldn’t have to exact for the finished tatting to be cute.

Look under the Pattern tab for photos of both the tatted Leaf Pattern and the tatted Witch Pattern.

My Favorite Tatting Pattern

Posted by janette on Jun 7, 2011 in Daily

I have seen thousands of Tatting Patters. I keep going back to Karen Lindsay’s Ribbon pattern, it is my favorite for many reasons. First and foremost it is so versitle. Changing the color combination completely changes the overall look of the finished tatting, but the pattern itself can be tatted in any combination of colors and be appropriate for any time of the year. Secondly, I love the pattern because it is easy enough for a beginning tatter to tat and yet holds the interest of an accomplised tatter. Most patterns do not fall into these two catagories so easily.

Holiday patterns

I have had a couple of requests for tatted Holiday patterns.  I highly recommend Karen Lindsay’s tatted patterns.  Her website can be located on my home page or at Tatting Applications llc.  For a beautiful Fall sampler try her tatted leaf pattern, it is very beautiful.  I also love her witch pattern, it makes me chuckle everytime I see it.

Tatting time of the year

Posted by janette on Jan 1, 2010 in Daily

The time of year that domestic feelings surface has arrived again. Nothing satisfies like to the feeling of snuggling up in front of a warm fire with shuttle in hand and tatting a beautiful piece of lace. I hope every tatter has at least one day of being snowed in to enjoy this wonderful feeling this winter.

Economics and tatting

Posted by janette on Apr 9, 2009 in Daily

Women love hobbies!  Working women and noncareer women, young and mature, we all love to create, it is part of our nature to be creatative.  With the economic changes we are experiencing what could fit into a tight budget better than tatting.  A tatting shuttle and a spool of thread costs less than $10.00.  With some time and creativity the $10.00 becomes a beautiful article to add to your home or give as a gift, which saves even more money by giving a special handmade gift rather than something found at a craft store.  The money spent on the shuttle is an investment to be reused over and over again.  In general one spool of thread can make two or three motifs.

If the economic crunch is pinching your pocket and you still have the urge to be creative, tatting is the perfect answer!

scrapbooking and tatting

Posted by janette on Mar 9, 2009 in Daily, Tatting Ideas
Scrapbooking is my summer hobbie.  Last summer I found several family pictures taken with my Grandmother.  I love the picture of her as a young woman and decided a scrapbook page dedicated to her was appropriate.  My Grandmother tatted, crocheted, quilted,  knitted and you name it.  Her hand work was part of her everyday life.  The scapbook page on the home page is of her with a tatted side edge and tatted hearts.  The heart pattern is included in my Learn to Tat instruction book.  This summer I will scrapbook a few pages of my mother, her handwork was also remarkable.
I love that tatting can be applied in a new way beyond hankies.  I spent the past week tatting gorgeous motifs which are then sewn onto samplers.  Samplers are the best way to display tatting because any theme can be followed to display something seasonal and festive year around.  I think pieces of old tatting can be clipped off of old cloth and freshed up and attached unto samplers too.
The home economics teacher at the high school I work at, told me that the best way to whiten discolored antique lace is to soak it in Clorox 2 for 15-30 minutes.  I have tried it and it works great.  It is safe and whites the lace without bleach.  Bleach is too harsh for fragile antique lace. <
Does anyone know of shops located in the Phoenix area that specialize in handwork?  I like specialty shops, the atmosphere and feeling of a unique find is a thrill to me.  I shop Michaels, Hobbie Lobbie and the large chain stores like we all do, but the thrill of a small specialty shop is my way of spending a Saturday afternoon.
